Pakistan Lifts Ban on the Hunting of Houbara Bustard

OSME has received news that Pakistan Supreme Court has lifted the ban on the hunting of Houbara Bustard in the country. This controversial decision will please some people but horrify others. Each permit apparently allows the dignitary, usually from Gulf countries, to hunt in a designated area for up to 10 days, killing a total of 100 bustards. Conservationists both local and from outside the country feel that such hunting is in no way sustainable. However, local provincial governments have argued that the money brought in by such rich hunting parties is beneficial for the area while the national government have said openly that the hunting ban directly affected relations with Gulf states.
