Besh Barmag: autumn migration 2023 – call for counters!
Do you want to witness one of the world’s best bird migration spectacles?
On the first of September the third full season of Besh Barmag Bird Migration Count kicks off in Azerbaijan. For three months until 30 November 2023 volunteer ornithologists from various countries flock together to monitor migrating birds along the Caspian Sea. And more counters are needed!
At the Besh Barmag bottleneck, a narrow coastal plain between the Greater Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, no less than three million birds, likely more, and of some 300 species are expected to pass the counting station. It’s quite simply an incredible birding experience and it helps to shine a light on many conservation issue in this little studied corner of the world. OSME has helped develop and co-fund this initiative and its young champions since the early days, and we’re glad to see the continuation of both the count itself and the young people involved.
You wish to join the count? Please check the Birding Azerbaijan website and get in touch with the team! Ask any question and they can also assist in planning your stay and advise on all logistics.
