Zhanibek Ibatov, 26, participated in the Central Asian Conservation Network’s ornithological internship for students and young professionals in Central Asia, sponsored by OSME. Originally from Aktau in Western Kazakhstan, Zhanibek graduated with a degree in ecology from the Atyrau State University. His interest in ornithology grew throughout his student years and he has become a dedicated birdwatcher and bird photographer. He applied to the CACN internship programme keen to develop practical field skills in ornithology. Zhanibek undertook an internship in Khujand, Tajikistan, with the Youth Group for Protection of Environment in June this year.
“One of the most valuable opportunities that took my experience in ornithology to a new level was participating in an ornithological internship at the Youth Group for Protection of Environment (YGPE) in Khujand, Tajikistan. This internship became an important milestone for me, not only because it provided new knowledge but also because it allowed me to discover nature from a different perspective and deepen my understanding of the fascinating world of birds.

During the internship, we learned various bird monitoring techniques and gained hands-on experience observing birds in their natural habitats. Starting each day early in the morning, we explored different ecosystems, studying bird behavior, movement, and ecology. Seeing in practice many of the concepts I had previously encountered only in books and lectures was an incredibly valuable learning experience.
The most enjoyable part for me was the process of birdwatching itself. I realized that bird observation is much more than simply spotting birds—it requires patience, careful attention, and the ability to notice subtle details while listening to every sound of nature. Every field excursion brought new discoveries, and seeing some bird species in the wild for the very first time was truly exciting.
Among the most memorable experiences of the internship was observing Egyptian Vulture and White Storks. I had never seen such a large gathering of Egyptian Vultures in one place before, and witnessing this impressive congregation was unforgettable. Equally fascinating was observing White Storks during their nesting season. Almost every utility pole supported a nest, and each nest contained two to four chicks. Watching these magnificent birds care for their young in their natural environment was a remarkable experience that left a lasting impression on me.
Working in such an international environment broadened my professional perspective and strengthened my understanding of the importance of biodiversity conservation and bird protection. It also gave me the opportunity to exchange knowledge with people who share the same passion for ornithology and nature conservation.
This internship contributed not only to my academic and professional development but also to my personal growth. Working closely with nature, experiencing a new culture, and participating in responsible field research increased my confidence and inspired me to continue developing in this field.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to YGPE, the CACN, and OSME, and to everyone who contributed to organizing this internship. This experience has given me great motivation for my future academic and professional career. I hope to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained to the conservation of nature and the advancement of ornithological research. This internship has shown me that such opportunities are an invaluable school for young researchers, and I am certain that the memories and lessons I gained will stay with me for many years to come.”
